Your Ball Goes Farther — But Not in the Way You Think
The first thing altitude does is make every shot fly farther. At 6,200 feet — where courses like Edgewood Tahoe and Incline Village sit — you're getting 12–15% more carry than you would at sea level. Your stock 7-iron that goes 155 yards at home is now carrying 175.
The mistake first-timers make is overswinging to compensate for distances that don't need compensating. Club down. Trust it. The ball is going to fly — you don't need to help it.
“Your 7-iron at 155 yards back home is now a 9-iron. Trust the altitude. Don't overswing.”
Hydration: The One Everyone Gets Wrong
At altitude, you dehydrate 30–50% faster than at sea level — and you don't feel it the same way. The dry Sierra air pulls moisture from your lungs with every breath. By the time you feel thirsty at hole 12, you're already behind.
Bring twice the water you'd normally carry. Start drinking before the round. Avoid the temptation to put away beers on the cart before hole 10 — save it for the 19th hole. We've seen more 4-day buddy trips fall apart at hole 15 on day 2 than any other place.
Book Morning Tee Times — Non-Negotiable
The Sierra Nevada creates afternoon convective thunderstorms June through August, especially above 6,000 feet. Courses at Tahoe and Truckee are exposed to these. A 2pm tee time on a beautiful morning can turn into a suspended round by 3:30.
Book your most important rounds at 7am–10am. You'll finish before the storms build. The morning light at these elevations is also spectacular — the rounds you describe to people for years happen in the morning, not the afternoon.
Pace Yourself — You'll Fatigue Faster Than Expected
Walking 18 holes at 6,000 feet is equivalent to walking 21–22 holes at sea level in terms of cardiovascular load. Most golfers who ride a cart don't notice until day 2 or 3 when accumulated fatigue catches up with them.
If you're planning 4+ rounds over 4 days, schedule your highest-profile courses for the first two days when you're freshest. Save Wolf Run or a shorter Graeagle course for day 4 when your legs are gone. And get 8 hours of sleep — at altitude, recovery slows down.
