Best Time to Play Golf in Reno & Lake Tahoe

Most groups book the week they can get away from work. That\'s fine. But if you have any flexibility, here\'s exactly when the courses are best, the prices are lowest, and the weather actually cooperates.

The Season Breakdown

🌸 May–June: The Smart Money

This is when the serious golf traveler books. Courses at higher elevations are just opening — everything is lush, freshly aerated, and staff is enthusiastic about the season ahead. Temperatures in Reno run 65–80°F. Lake Tahoe courses open progressively through May. Rates are 15–25% below peak.

The one caveat: early May at elevation (Graeagle, Truckee, Incline Village) can still see frost mornings. Tee times before 9am carry some risk. After 10am, conditions are perfect.

September at Graeagle is the best-kept secret in Sierra golf. Empty courses, fall color starting, rates that make July look embarrassing.

☀️ July–August: Peak Season

The obvious choice for most groups — summer vacation windows, kids out of school, maximum daylight. The downsides are real: prices are at their highest, tee times at ArrowCreek and Edgewood Tahoe book 6–8 weeks out, and the American Century Celebrity Championship at Edgewood in mid-July closes the course for nearly a week.

If your group wants July at Edgewood Tahoe or ArrowCreek, you need to be talking to GTHS by early May. Those courses do not hold group tee times speculatively.

🍂 September–October: The Best Season Nobody Books

September is the correct answer. Temperatures drop to 60–75°F in Reno, the high Sierra gets its first hints of fall color, courses are in excellent condition from a full season of maintenance, and prices drop back to shoulder rates. Graeagle in particular is stunning in late September — the aspens turn gold and the fairways are empty.

October at lower-elevation courses (Reno, Carson Valley) is still excellent. Higher-elevation courses close progressively from late October depending on snowfall.

❄️ November–March: Reno Only

Reno golf in winter is underrated. Temperatures average 40–55°F on sunny days — cold but playable with the right gear. Rates are at their annual low. ArrowCreek, Wolf Run, and Lakeridge stay open through most winters. This is the season for groups who want maximum rounds per dollar and don't mind a jacket.
